9 ChatGPT Prompts to Tailor Your Resume, Tested on a Real Posting

Nine ChatGPT prompts for resume summaries, bullets, skills, tailoring and cover letters. Each has a do-not-invent rule, a real dated output and the fix to apply before you use it.

Quick answer

Good ChatGPT prompts for resume tailoring give the chatbot the whole job posting and your whole resume, ask for one task at a time, and forbid it from adding anything your resume does not say. Copy the nine prompts below, then apply the fix under each one before you use the answer.

Check my resume

How to use these prompts

  • Paste the whole posting. Not a summary of it. ChatGPT can only match the requirements it can see.
  • Check every number and tool in the answer. Each one should already be on your resume. Fill in or delete every [ADD NUMBER].
  • Keep your own voice. Rewrite any line you would not say out loud in an interview.

Replace each [BRACKET] with your own text. Every prompt ends with the same rule: "Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead." Keep it in.

Each sample output comes from one run through OpenAI's API with the model gpt-6.1-sol on October 23, 2026. The resume and posting were written for this guide. ChatGPT in your browser may use a different model and answer differently, so check your own answers the same way.

Prompt for your resume summary

1. Write a summary for one job

Prompt

Write a 2-sentence resume summary for the job posting below. Use only facts from my resume, and the job title I actually hold. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

Job posting:

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

Marketing Coordinator with 3 years of experience running email campaigns using Mailchimp and supporting social media on Instagram and Facebook for a regional retailer. Holds a B.A. in Communications, with experience pulling monthly Google Analytics data, writing brochure and newsletter copy, and helping plan two in-store events each year.

Fix to apply: Nothing was invented. The second sentence lists every other duty, so keep only what the posting asks for, such as the newsletter copywriting. An earlier version of this prompt said to use the posting's job title, and the output called this marketing coordinator a "Marketing Specialist", a title the resume never held. That is why the prompt now asks for the title you actually hold.

Prompts for your bullets

2. Rewrite weak bullets

Prompt

Rewrite each bullet below so it starts with a strong verb and says what the work was for. Keep each bullet under 25 words and keep every fact as written. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

My bullets:
[PASTE YOUR BULLETS]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

Delivered weekly promotional emails to our customer list using Mailchimp for customer outreach.

Published posts on Instagram and Facebook and replied to comments to support social media engagement.

Fix to apply: No new facts, but "for customer outreach" and "to support social media engagement" are filler. ChatGPT does not know what the work was for, so it guessed. Replace those tails with the real purpose or result, or cut them.

3. Find the numbers you already have

Prompt

For each bullet below, ask me one short question that would help me add a real number: how many, how often, how big, or how much changed. Do not suggest numbers yourself. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

My bullets:
[PASTE YOUR BULLETS]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

How many customers received your weekly Mailchimp emails? [ADD NUMBER]

How many Google Analytics metrics did you pull each month? [ADD NUMBER]

Fix to apply: Answer the first question. Skip the second: a count of metrics is not a result. Ask yourself what those numbers showed and what changed because of them. Ignore the [ADD NUMBER] tags it put after each question.

Prompts to tailor your resume to a job posting

4. Tailor your bullets to a posting

Prompt

Rewrite the bullets in my resume to use the words of this job posting, but only where my experience truly matches. Leave a bullet as it is when nothing in the posting fits it. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

Job posting:
[PASTE THE WHOLE JOB POSTING]

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

Sent weekly promotional email campaigns to a customer list of [ADD NUMBER] using Mailchimp

Compiled monthly Google Analytics results for reporting at team meetings

Fix to apply: It stayed with the facts and left out HubSpot and LinkedIn, which the posting asks for and the resume never mentions. Fill in [ADD NUMBER] with your real list size, or delete it. Then check that each new posting word, such as "campaigns", is true of your work.

5. Match each requirement to your resume

Prompt

List every requirement in this job posting. For each one, quote the line from my resume that shows it, or write MISSING. Count a requirement as met only if my resume says so. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

Job posting:
[PASTE THE WHOLE JOB POSTING]

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

Strict match count: 4 of 6 requirements, plus 1 of 6 responsibility components, are explicitly supported. Partial matches are not counted as met.

Fix to apply: This was the most useful answer of the nine. Go through every PARTIAL and MISSING row. If you did the work, add a bullet that says so. If you did not, leave it out. ChatGPT read "pulled monthly numbers" as not quite reporting campaign performance, and a recruiter may read it that way too.

Prompt for your skills section

6. Build your skills line from the posting

Prompt

List the skills and tools this job posting asks for. Sort them into three groups: already in my skills section, shown in my bullets but missing from my skills section, and not in my resume at all. Then write a new skills line using only the first two groups. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

Job posting:
[PASTE THE WHOLE JOB POSTING]

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

SKILLS: Mailchimp, Google Analytics, Email Marketing, Email Campaign Execution, Social Media Management (Instagram, Facebook), Basic Analytics Reporting, Copywriting, Event Coordination Support

Fix to apply: Two problems. The new line drops WordPress, Canva and Microsoft Excel, which are true skills the posting did not mention. Keep them. And labels like "Email Campaign Execution" are padding. Use the plain names a recruiter would search for: email marketing, Instagram, Facebook, copywriting.

Prompts to find problems

7. Get a recruiter's review

Prompt

Read my resume as a recruiter hiring for the job below. List the 5 biggest problems, most important first, each with one specific fix. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

Job posting:
[PASTE THE WHOLE JOB POSTING]

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

Fix: Rewrite the social bullet to explain your scheduling or calendar responsibilities for Instagram and Facebook, if applicable. Don’t add LinkedIn unless you used it professionally.

Fix to apply: A useful list that keeps saying to add things only if they are true. Watch its suggested summary, though: "managing Instagram and Facebook content" is a stronger claim than "posted on Instagram and Facebook". Use the stronger verb only if it is true.

8. Find vague and weak lines

Prompt

Find the weak lines in my resume: bullets with no result, vague verbs such as "helped" or "responsible for", and words repeated across bullets. Quote each line and give a fixed version. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

Fixed: “Collaborated with store managers to plan two in-store events each year.”

These revisions improve clarity and scope, but they do not turn the bullets into achievement statements: your resume does not supply outcomes, so I have not added any.

Fix to apply: It said plainly that the bullets still show no results. Only you can add them. Fill in or delete each [ADD NUMBER], then add one real result to each bullet where you have one.

Prompt for a cover letter

9. Write a cover letter from your resume

Prompt

Write a cover letter under 200 words for this job, using only my resume. Do not open with "I am writing to apply". Name the two requirements I match best and the resume line that shows each. Do not add tools, numbers, employers or results that are not in my resume. Where a number would help, write [ADD NUMBER] instead.

Job posting:
[PASTE THE WHOLE JOB POSTING]

My resume:
[PASTE YOUR RESUME]
Output from gpt-6.1-sol, October 2026

My background in email campaigns and social media aligns closely with your Marketing Specialist role.

My resume states: “Sent weekly promotional emails to our customer list using Mailchimp.”

Fix to apply: Nothing invented, but not ready to send. It followed the prompt too literally and put "My resume states" lines in the letter, so rewrite those as normal sentences. It also says nothing about the employer, because it knows nothing about them. Add one true line on why you want this job.

What the test run showed

With the rule in place, none of the nine answers added a tool, employer or number that was not in the resume. The problems were quieter: filler phrases, a stronger verb than the facts support, true skills dropped, and, when an earlier prompt allowed it, a job title the person never held. Read every line before you paste it into your resume.

What a chatbot cannot check

ChatGPT reads the text you paste. An applicant tracking system reads your file, and a PDF with columns, tables or text in images can come out jumbled or empty. The chatbot never sees that. It also cannot tell which of its own additions are true. Only you can.

The free ATS checker reads your PDF, DOCX or TXT file as plain text, the way an applicant tracking system does, and shows which tools and certifications in the posting your resume names. When you are ready to tailor, the resume tailor works from what is already in your resume. On the same sample resume and posting, it left HubSpot out, because the resume never mentions it.

Questions

What is the best ChatGPT prompt for resume writing?

One that gives it your real resume and the posting, asks it to rewrite only what your resume already shows, and tells it not to add tools, numbers or results. The prompts above all include that rule.

Do employers care if your resume is ChatGPT?

They care whether it is accurate and specific. A resume that reads generic, or claims results you cannot explain, is the problem, whichever tool helped write it.

Can recruiters detect AI?

Sometimes, by the writing: generic phrases, claims with no specifics, and wording that matches other applicants. Make every line true and specific to you.

What is the 7 second rule in resume?

It is the idea that a recruiter decides in seconds whether to keep reading. A 2018 eye-tracking study by Ladders measured an average initial screen of 7.4 seconds. Put your title, your strongest results and the skills the job asks for at the top.

What are the 3 C's of a good resume?

A common way to put it is clear, concise and consistent: easy to scan, no filler, and the same format and tense throughout.
