Quick verdict

In a Claude vs ChatGPT resume test on the same resume and posting, ChatGPT invented nothing, Claude stretched two duties, and Gemini added 14 claims the resume never made, including HubSpot and LinkedIn. How the test worked

Each tool got the same fictional marketing coordinator resume and the same Marketing Specialist posting, both written for this guide. The three chatbots got this exact prompt, with the posting and resume pasted in full, once each, in a new chat:

Tailor this resume to this job description. Return the full rewritten resume.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
<job description>

RESUME:
<resume>
  • Claude: claude.ai on a paid plan, model Opus 5.5 at Medium effort.
  • ChatGPT: OpenAI's API with gpt-6-astra, the model the ChatGPT app had selected the same day.
  • Gemini: gemini.google.com on the free plan, in Auto mode (Gemini 3 models).
  • Resumedit: the resume tailor, given the same resume and posting.

All four ran on October 23, 2026. This is one test on one resume, not a benchmark. Run the same prompt tomorrow, or on a different plan, and the answers will change. Use the counts to know what to look for in your own results.

An invented claim is any tool, number, result, job title or duty that the original resume neither says nor clearly implies. Purpose phrases such as "to support customer engagement" were not counted.

What each tool wrote

Claude (Opus 5.5): 2 invented claims

The best-written rewrite of the four. Every line reads like a person wrote it. Two duties grew past what the resume says:

Original resume

Sent weekly promotional emails to our customer list using Mailchimp

Claude

Plan, write, and send weekly promotional email campaigns to the customer list in Mailchimp
The resume says Alex sent the emails. It never says Alex planned or wrote them.

Original resume

Helped plan two in-store events each year with the store managers

Claude

Coordinate two in-store events per year in partnership with store managers
"Helped plan" became "coordinate", which reads as running the events.

Claude then listed what it left out because the resume did not support it: audience segmentation, LinkedIn, content calendars and recommending improvements. It also suggested a line with blanks for real numbers, "Sent weekly campaigns to [X]K subscribers, averaging [Y]% open rate." That list is the most useful part of any answer in this test.

ChatGPT (gpt-6-astra): 0 invented claims

ChatGPT kept to the facts. It kept Alex's helper role on the events and added none of the posting's missing tools:

Original resume

Helped plan two in-store events each year with the store managers

ChatGPT

Supported planning and coordination of two in-store events annually, collaborating with store managers.
"Helped" stayed "supported". Nothing was added.

Original resume

Pulled monthly numbers from Google Analytics for the team meeting

ChatGPT

Compiled monthly Google Analytics performance data for team meetings, supporting campaign results reporting and marketing discussions.
Accurate, but the tail is filler. Cut everything after "team meetings".

The output came back in markdown, with # headings and ** bold, so it needs cleaning before it goes in a document. ChatGPT also said nothing about what the resume was missing.

Gemini (Auto mode): 14 invented claims

Gemini wrote the most confident resume and invented the most. It took the posting's wording and wrote it in as Alex's experience:

Original resume

Sent weekly promotional emails to our customer list using Mailchimp

Gemini

Planned, segmented, and sent weekly promotional email campaigns using Mailchimp, consistently optimizing open and click-through rates.
Planning, segmenting and optimizing rates are all new. The resume gives no rates.

Original resume

Posted on Instagram and Facebook and replied to comments

Gemini

Managed social media calendars and published daily content across Instagram and Facebook, driving community engagement and follower growth.
Calendars, daily posting and follower growth are all new.

Original resume

Mailchimp, Google Analytics, WordPress, Canva, Microsoft Excel

Gemini

Marketing Platforms: Mailchimp, HubSpot ... Social Media: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Content Scheduling
HubSpot and LinkedIn appear nowhere in the resume. Both are in the posting.
All 14 of Gemini's invented claims
  1. "Marketing Specialist", the posting's job title, used as Alex's title
  2. "targeted email campaigns" and "segmented" (audience segmentation)
  3. "managing multi-channel social media strategies"
  4. "driving growth through data-driven reporting"
  5. "Planned" the email campaigns
  6. "consistently optimizing open and click-through rates"
  7. "Managed social media calendars"
  8. "published daily content"
  9. "driving community engagement and follower growth"
  10. "to present strategic insights and improvement recommendations"
  11. "Successfully coordinated two annual in-store events", from "helped plan"
  12. "enhancing local brand visibility and customer acquisition"
  13. HubSpot in skills
  14. LinkedIn in skills

This was Gemini's free Auto mode. A paid Gemini model may do better, so test it with your own resume before you trust it.

Resumedit: 0 invented claims

Resumedit changed the least. The summary stayed as written, and most bullets did too. It moved Instagram and Facebook into the skills line, because a bullet already showed that work, and rewrote one bullet toward the posting:

Original resume

Pulled monthly numbers from Google Analytics for the team meeting

Resumedit

Pulled monthly numbers from Google Analytics to report campaign performance at the team meeting.
Uses the posting's words for work the resume already shows.

It left HubSpot out and listed it as a requirement the resume does not show, so you can add it only if you have used it. If you want a stronger read, Claude's rewrite is better written. Use Resumedit when every line has to hold up in an interview.

Rewriting bullets

Claude wrote the best lines, and ChatGPT was close behind. Both still need a check: compare each new verb with what you did. "Helped plan" and "coordinated" are different jobs in an interview.

Tailoring to a job posting

This is where chatbots invent. Gemini wrote HubSpot, LinkedIn and audience segmentation into the resume because the posting asked for them. Claude and ChatGPT left them out. Whatever you use, search the answer for every tool in the posting and delete any you have not used. The resume tailor only uses requirements your resume already shows.

Summaries

Keep the job title you held. Gemini called Alex a "Results-driven Marketing Specialist", the title of the job being applied for. Claude kept "Marketing coordinator", and ChatGPT wrote "Marketing professional".

Adding numbers

Only you know your numbers. Gemini invented a daily posting schedule and growth it could not know. Claude left blanks like [X] for you to fill. Ask any chatbot for blanks, then fill each one with a real figure or delete it.

Checking ATS readability

None of the three chatbots shows what an applicant tracking system reads from your file. A PDF with columns, tables or text in images can come out jumbled or empty, and a chatbot never sees that. The free ATS checker reads your PDF, DOCX or TXT file as plain text, the way an applicant tracking system does.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Claude if you want the best-written rewrite and a list of gaps to fill yourself.
  • Pick ChatGPT if you want a careful rewrite that sticks to your facts.
  • Pick Gemini if you already use it and will check every line it adds against your resume.
  • Pick Resumedit if you want tailoring that only reshapes what your resume says, plus an ATS check of your file.

Questions

Is it better to use Claude or ChatGPT for resume?

In our one test, both kept closer to the original resume than Gemini did. ChatGPT added nothing, and Claude stretched two duties but wrote the most readable rewrite. Whichever you use, check every changed line against what you actually did.

Is it okay to use Claude for a resume?

Yes, as a writing aid. Give it your real resume and the posting, then read every line it changes and delete anything you could not explain in an interview.

Do employers care if you use ChatGPT for a resume?

Mostly they care whether it is accurate. Using a tool to tighten wording is common. Letting it add results you cannot back up is the real risk.

Can employers detect AI in resumes?

Sometimes. Generic phrasing, claims with no specifics and wording that matches other applicants stand out. A resume where every line is true and specific to you is the safe choice.

Can ATS detect ChatGPT?

An applicant tracking system mostly reads and stores your resume. Some can be set up to flag content, but what usually gets noticed is generic writing, by people, whoever wrote it.
