Does ATS Reject Resumes? What Actually Happens

Does an ATS reject resumes on its own? Mostly not. Here is what does: knockout questions, recruiter filters, and resumes the system cannot read.

Quick answer

Does an ATS reject resumes on its own? Mostly not. An applicant tracking system stores and sorts applications; rejections come from knockout questions on the application form, from the filters recruiters run, and from people reading. The real exception is a resume the system cannot read.

What recruiters say

In a 2025 interview study by Enhancv, 23 of 25 U.S. recruiters said their systems do not auto-reject resumes for formatting, content or design. Enhancv notes the sample is small and describes the results as consistent themes rather than national statistics (Enhancv, 2025).

That does not mean a qualified person always gets through. In a 2021 Harvard Business School and Accenture survey, 88% of employers agreed that qualified high-skills candidates are screened out of their hiring process because they do not match the exact criteria in the job description (Hidden Workers: Untapped Talent). The filter is usually the criteria, applied by people and by the searches they run.

The three places a resume actually gets rejected

1. Knockout questions

These are the yes or no questions on the application form, such as whether you hold a required license or can work in the country without sponsorship. Employers can set them to reject automatically. Greenhouse documents rules that reject an applicant "based on an applicant's answer to a question" (Greenhouse), and Lever has a workflow to "knock out candidates based on a set of criteria" (Lever). Your resume is not read at all at this step. Your answers are.

2. Recruiter searches and filters

A recruiter searches the applicant pool for titles, tools and skills. A resume that does the work but uses different words does not come up. That looks like rejection, but it is the resume not being found.

3. A person reading it

Most rejections are a person deciding someone else fits better. The resume's job is to make the match obvious in a quick read.

When the resume itself is the problem

An ATS reads your file as text and fills in a profile from it. If it cannot read the file, there is nothing to search: a scanned PDF with no text layer, headings it does not recognize, or dates it cannot pick out. That is the one case where the document, not the reader, sinks the application.

The free ATS checker reads your file the same way and tells you if there is no text to read, then checks your headings, contact details, dates and length.

How to avoid being filtered out

  • Answer knockout questions accurately. A wrong yes gets found later; a wrong no ends it now.
  • Send a file with real text in it, with standard headings and dates on every role.
  • Use the posting's words for the things you have done, so a search finds you.
  • Apply where you meet the required criteria. No resume trick gets past a hard requirement you lack.

Questions

Why is my resume getting rejected by ATS?

Usually it is not the ATS. Check three things: your answers to the application's knockout questions, whether your file has readable text with standard headings and dates, and whether it uses the posting's words for what you have done.

How to avoid ATS rejection?

Answer knockout questions accurately, send a file with real text in it, use standard headings and dates, and name the posting's requirements in the bullets where you did the work.

Is a 70% ATS score good?

It depends on the tool. Every checker builds its score differently, so 70% on one is not 70% on another. Look at what the score says is missing instead of the number.

Is a 2 page resume ok for ATS?

Yes. An applicant tracking system reads every page. Length matters to the person reading it.

Can ChatGPT check ATS score of resume?

It can comment on your wording, but it does not read your file the way an applicant tracking system does and can answer differently each time. A checker gives the same result for the same resume and posting.
