Quick answer

The answer to "how long should a resume be?" is one page with under about ten years of experience, and two pages with more. Go past two only for an academic CV, and never for a US federal job, where two pages is the limit.
Career stagePagesWhy
Student or new grad1Education, internships and projects fit on one page.
Early career, under 5 years1One or two roles. A second page would be padding.
Mid career, 5 to 10 years1, sometimes 2Two when each recent role needs the room.
Senior, 10+ years2Recent roles need detail. Older ones shrink to a line.

When two pages are right

Two pages are right when the second page holds work the posting asks about. That usually means one of these:

  • About ten or more years of experience that is relevant to the job.
  • Several recent roles that each match the posting and each need three to five bullets.
  • Licenses, certifications or technical projects the job asks you to list.

If you go to two, put your strongest, most recent work on page one. A reader who stops there should still want to call you. A second page with three lines on it looks unfinished, so either fill most of it or cut back to one.

Do not shrink the font or margins to squeeze onto one page. Keep body text at 10 to 12 points. A crammed page is harder to read than a clean second one.

What to cut first

Work down this list until the resume fits.

  1. Roles older than about ten years. Keep each to one line.
  2. Bullets that repeat a skill another bullet already shows.
  3. Duties with no result, like "Responsible for weekly reports".
  4. An objective statement and "References available on request".
  5. Skills the posting does not ask for and everyone has.
  6. Long publication or project lists. Move them to a link.

Keep three to five bullets on recent roles and fewer further back.

Example, written for this guide. An old retail role that took five lines:

Sales Associate, Harbor Outdoor Supply, 2011 to 2014
- Greeted customers and answered questions about camping gear
- Restocked shelves and helped with monthly inventory counts
- Ran the register and handled returns
- Trained two seasonal hires on the point-of-sale system

The same role as one line, for a resume whose recent work is in marketing:

Sales Associate, Harbor Outdoor Supply, 2011 to 2014. Retail sales, inventory and training seasonal staff.

CVs and federal resumes

Academic CVs

An academic CV lists your publications, presentations, grants, teaching and service in full, so it grows with your career and has no page limit. Use it for academic and research jobs. For an industry job, cut it down to a one or two page resume.

CVs outside the US

In the UK, Ireland and much of Europe, "CV" is the everyday word for what the US calls a resume, and the same one or two page guidance applies. Norms differ by country, including whether to add a photo or date of birth, so check what is expected where you apply.

US federal resumes

Federal jobs on USAJOBS have a hard limit. The USAJOBS Help Center says federal agencies only accept resumes up to two pages, and USAJOBS will not let you upload or build a longer one. The limit took effect on September 27, 2025 (checked October 2026).

Two pages still has to cover what a federal resume needs: for each relevant job, the title and employer, the series and grade for any federal role, start and end dates with month and year, and hours worked per week. Cut older and unrelated work first.

Does an ATS care about length?

Length does not change how a parser reads your file. A three-page resume is parsed as well as a one-page one. The person reading it is the one who cares, and later material is rarely read.

USAJOBS is the exception: it will not take a resume longer than two pages for an application.

Upload a PDF to Resumedit's free checker and it flags anything longer than two pages under Resume readiness. It takes a few points off readiness and never touches the match, because the length problem is for the reader, not the parser.

Questions

Is a 2 page resume ok?

Yes, once you have the experience to fill it, usually around ten years or more, or for roles with a lot of required detail. Early in your career, one page reads better.

Is it unprofessional to have a 3 page resume?

For most private-sector jobs it is too long. Cut older roles and repeated duties first. Academic CVs are the exception, and federal resumes on USAJOBS are limited to two pages.

What are red flags on resumes?

For a recruiter: unexplained gaps, bullets that list duties instead of results, and padding to fill space. For an applicant tracking system: a file with no readable text or roles with no dates.

What are the top 5 resume mistakes?

Sending one generic version to every job, listing duties instead of results, making it too long, using a layout an applicant tracking system cannot read, and claiming things you cannot back up.

What do resumes look like now in 2026?

One or two pages, a simple layout an applicant tracking system can read, a short summary written for the job, and bullets with real numbers.
