Quick answer

A resume gap after a layoff needs one honest line, not an apology. End your last job where it ended, add a short line for any gap longer than a few months, and be ready to say the same thing in one sentence in an interview.

Do you need to explain it at all?

  • Under three months: no. A normal job search takes time. Use month and year dates and leave it.
  • Three to six months: optional. Add a line if you did something worth naming.
  • Over six months: yes. A short line stops a reader from guessing.

Six months is where it starts to matter. In a 2021 Harvard Business School and Accenture survey, 48% of employers said they filtered out middle-skills candidates with employment gaps of more than six months (Hidden Workers: Untapped Talent). A line that explains the gap gives a person a reason to keep reading.

Resume lines you can copy

Put the line where the next job would go, with dates, like any other entry. Examples:

SituationResume line
Laid off, searchingCareer break, Jan 2026 to present: position eliminated in a company-wide layoff; job search and training.
Laid off, took a courseCareer break, Jan 2026 to present: position eliminated in a layoff; completed the Google Data Analytics Certificate.
Laid off, freelancingFreelance marketing consultant, Feb 2026 to present: email campaigns for two local businesses.
Laid off, caregivingCareer break, 2025 to 2026: family caregiving after my role was eliminated.

Only list a course or a client that is real. A short true line is better than a long one that falls apart in the first interview question.

Wording for the layoff itself

  • Say "position eliminated" or "laid off in a restructuring". Both are plain and common.
  • Do not write "terminated" for a layoff. It reads as being fired for cause.
  • Leave out how you feel about it. The reader wants the fact, not the story.

In a cover letter

One sentence, then move on:

My role at Northwind was eliminated in a company-wide layoff in January, and I have spent the time since finishing a data analytics certificate that fits this role.

On LinkedIn

Turn on Open to Work, visible to recruiters only if you prefer. In your About section, add one line with the same wording as your resume, so the two match.

In the interview

Three sentences: what happened, what you did, and why this job.

My team was cut in a company-wide layoff in January. Since then I finished an analytics certificate and did two freelance projects to keep my campaign work current. This role is the kind of email marketing work I want to keep doing, with the reporting side I have been building.

Restart the search with a plan

A layoff search goes better when it is organized: which jobs you applied to, which version of your resume went where, and when to follow up. Resumedit's free job tracker keeps those together, with reminders.

Questions

Is a 1 year gap bad on a resume?

Not if you explain it. A year after a layoff is common. Add one line with the dates and what you did, and be ready to say it in a sentence in an interview.

How to explain unemployment gaps on a resume?

Add an entry where the next job would go: "Career break, Jan 2026 to present: position eliminated in a layoff; completed a data analytics certificate." Keep it short and true.

Is a gap in a resume a red flag?

An unexplained one can be. In a 2021 Harvard Business School and Accenture survey, 48% of employers said they filtered out middle-skills candidates with gaps of more than six months. One honest line answers the question before it is asked.

How much of a resume gap is acceptable?

Under three months needs no explanation. Over six months deserves a line saying what happened and what you did.

What is the best answer for career gap?

Three sentences: what happened, what you did during the gap, and why you want this job. No apology and no long story.
