Quick answer

A good ATS score on Resumedit's match score is 55 or higher, and 75 or higher is a Strong match. It estimates how well your resume fits one job posting, not what the employer's applicant tracking system shows a recruiter.

Resumedit's scale

These bands are Resumedit's own, for its match score. Another tool's 70 means something else.

Match scoreLabelWhat it means
75 to 100Strong matchApply as is.
55 to 74Good matchWorth applying. Close the gaps you can first.
40 to 54Fair matchRight field, real gaps.
Under 40Weak matchMost of what the posting asks for is not on your resume.

Resumedit's scale, October 2026.

Two rules change how to read it.

  • A missing hard requirement holds the label at Fair. If the posting requires a license, certification, clearance, degree or number of years that your resume does not show, the label goes no higher than Fair, whatever the percentage.
  • A short list moves a lot. With fewer than three requirements to score there is no percentage. With three or four, one requirement moves the number a lot, and the result says so.

What the number counts

The match score is the share of the posting's tools, skills, fields and certifications that your resume covers. Required items weigh more than nice-to-haves. A skill your experience shows gets full credit. The same skill sitting only in your skills list gets less. Soft skills like communication are left out.

So the fastest real gain is usually moving a skill from your skills list into a bullet that shows you using it. The methodology page shows the free check worked through on a real resume.

Why scores from different tools do not compare

Every tool builds its score differently, so a number from one does not carry to another. No applicant tracking system shows candidates a score either. Any ATS score you see was built by the tool that showed it to you. What a resume score measures goes through what to ask of any score.

Even inside Resumedit there are two different results.

  • The free checker gives a count, not a percentage. Paste a posting and it tells you how many of the tools, licenses and certifications the posting names are on your resume, for example "6 of 9" (numbers written for this guide). It marks the posting's years, degree and job title requirements as met or not met. It also gives a readiness score out of 100 for whether the file reads cleanly: headings, contact details, dates and length.
  • The full match gives the percentage and the label. It also credits experience that shows a skill without naming it, which the free count does not.

Readiness is never added to the match. A high readiness score says your file is easy to read. It says nothing about whether you fit the job.

What to do with a low score

Act on what the result says is missing, not on the number. Adding words you cannot back up raises the number and leaves you with claims to defend in an interview.

  1. Start with required items marked missing. If you have one, add it where the work happened, in a bullet that shows it.
  2. Move skills out of the list. A skill in a bullet counts for more than the same skill in your skills section.
  3. Use the posting's words for things you did. If it says "customer onboarding" and you wrote "new client setup", use theirs. Finding the keywords in a job description covers how.
  4. Leave real gaps alone. If the missing item is a license, degree or years you do not have, no rewording fixes it. Decide whether to apply anyway.
  5. Under 40, look again at the posting. A Weak match often means a different field. A closer posting may be a better use of the application.

Example, written for this guide. A posting requires Salesforce, SQL and a PMP. Your resume lists Salesforce in skills and nowhere else, never mentions SQL, and has no PMP. Write a bullet that shows your Salesforce work, and add SQL only if you have used it. Without a PMP, the label stays at Fair however well the rest scores.

Questions

Is 80% a good ATS score?

On Resumedit's match score, yes: 75 and above is Strong. On other tools it depends, because every checker builds its score differently. Look at what the score says is missing.

Is an ATS score of 72 good?

On Resumedit's scale, 72 is Good, close to Strong. The quickest way up is to add the requirements it lists as missing that you genuinely have.

Is an ATS score of 60 good?

On Resumedit's scale, 60 is Good. It usually means a few requirements are not shown on your resume yet. Check which ones, and add any you have.

Will my CV pass ATS?

An applicant tracking system mostly reads and stores your CV for recruiters to search. To come through well, the file has to be readable as text and name what the job asks for. The free checker tests both.

Can ChatGPT check ATS score of resume?

It can comment on wording, but it does not read your file the way an applicant tracking system does and can answer differently each time. A checker gives the same result for the same resume and posting.
