Why a plain resume, and when to send one

Marketing resumes suffer more than most from applicant tracking systems, because the design instinct is strongest in this field. Multi-column layouts, campaign tiles, brand-coloured section rules and skill rating bars are all common on a marketing resume and all of them either flatten or disappear on the way into a parser.

The plain version is the one to upload to an application form. Keep the designed version for a recruiter conversation or a portfolio link, where the visual judgement it demonstrates is being assessed by someone who can see it.

What changes, and what deliberately does not

One column, conventional headings, and no graphics. The content is identical, which is the part that surprises people: every result, budget figure and team size survives the conversion because those were always text.

What needs attention in a marketing resume specifically is the percentage. Figures are the whole argument here, and a percent sign inside a graphic, a chart or a rating bar reaches the reviewer as nothing at all. Everything numeric has to be in the sentence.

What survives parsing, and what does not

Channel and platform names survive and are worth writing out in full at least once. A system matching against a requisition is looking for literal strings, and an acronym on its own may not match the expanded form the requisition used.

Campaign names generally mean nothing to a reader outside the company that ran them. Describe what the campaign did rather than what it was called, which helps the parser and helps the human immediately after it.

What a reviewer checks first

  • Is every number in the text rather than in a graphic or a chart?
  • Are channels and platforms written out in full at least once?
  • Do campaigns get described by what they did, not just named?
  • Are budget and team size stated so the results have a denominator?
