Why this layout suits a sales resume

Sales is the one function where a single number does most of the work. Quota attainment, quarter by quarter, is the closest thing any profession has to a public record, and a hiring manager reading a sales resume is looking for it before anything else.

The professional layout supports that because it gives each role enough room to carry attainment, territory and deal size together. Those three only mean something as a set: 120% of quota on a $400k number in a new territory and 120% on a $4m number in an inherited book are different achievements, and a layout that cramps the detail collapses them into the same line.

What a reviewer is actually looking for

Attainment first, and consistency across it. One spectacular year against three ordinary ones reads as a good territory rather than a good seller, and a reader who sees only the spectacular year quoted assumes the others were worse than they were.

Then the shape of the sale. Average deal size, cycle length, and whether you were selling to a practitioner, a department head or a procurement committee. A candidate who has only closed $20k self-serve deals is not a bad hire for a $500k enterprise motion, but they are a different hire, and the resume should not leave that to be discovered in week three.

Finally, whether you sourced or closed. Both are real jobs. A resume that is silent about it usually means the pipeline arrived pre-built, and a hiring manager who needs a hunter will assume so.

The sections that carry the weight

Experience, overwhelmingly. A sales resume is a record of numbers by role and there is little else the page needs to do. Two lines of summary at most, naming the segment and the motion.

Skills sections tend to be weakest here, because "negotiation" and "relationship building" describe every candidate who has ever applied. Replace that block with the CRM and sales stack you have actually operated in, which is at least a fact.

What a reviewer checks first

  • Is quota attainment stated for each role, not just the best one?
  • Are deal size and cycle length anywhere on the page?
  • Did this person source pipeline or close what was handed to them?
  • Does the segment sold to match the segment being hired for?
